HYROX: Just another fitness fad, or the next CrossFit? 🤔 Training Think Tank’s Team Went to the Dallas race to find out…

In the latest episode of the Training Think Tank podcast, the coaching team explores HYROX, a rapidly growing global fitness race that blends running with functional workout stations.

With team members recently competing in Dallas, the episode offers a comprehensive breakdown of the event and its place in the fitness world.

What Is HYROX?

HYROX is a standardized fitness race designed to test endurance, strength, and overall athleticism. Each race consists of eight 1-kilometer runs, with a functional workout station between each running segment. Participants must complete the following stations in sequence:

  • Ski Erg (1,000 meters)
  • Sled Push
  • Sled Pull
  • Burpee Broad Jumps (80 meters)
  • Rowing (1,000 meters)
  • Farmers Carry (200 meters)
  • Sandbag Lunges (100 meters)
  • Wall Balls (100 reps)

Altogether, athletes run a total of 8 kilometers and tackle physically demanding challenges. The layout is identical across all races, enabling participants to measure their performance against others worldwide.

Launched in Germany in 2017, HYROX has rapidly expanded its reach, attracting thousands of competitors globally. The Dallas event alone saw over 6,000 participants, marking its growing appeal in the fitness community.

The Dallas HYROX Experience

For Training Think Tank coaches and athletes, the Dallas HYROX race was both an exciting debut and a learning opportunity. Competing in the doubles division, team members Adam and Becky shared their experiences on the podcast.

Adam noted the accessibility of the event. “The setup was so intuitive,” he said, describing how race-day nerves melted away as soon as the event began. Despite initial intimidation over remembering station order, participants quickly adapted to the race’s flow.

Becky highlighted the camaraderie fostered by the event, particularly the pre-race pep talk from a “hype girl” who energized competitors in the corral. “She got us pumped and reminded us that we were all in this together,” Becky said.

Spectators also enjoyed a dynamic experience. Unlike traditional endurance races, HYROX allows supporters to move between workout stations, cheering on athletes up close. Training Think Tank coach Kyle reflected on how this kept spectators engaged throughout the competition.

HYROX vs. CrossFit

As the podcast team discussed, HYROX may look like a cousin to CrossFit, but key differences set the two apart. HYROX races follow a predictable and repetitive structure, while CrossFit thrives on variability.

This consistency appeals to athletes who value measurable progress. Each HYROX race serves as a benchmark, allowing participants to track improvements over time. Training Think Tank coaches compared this to CrossFit’s methodology of repeating workouts to gauge progress, such as the CrossFit Open.

However, the emphasis on running makes HYROX distinct. While CrossFit athletes often excel at the functional workout stations, success in HYROX requires sustained endurance. “Your running threshold is the most critical factor,” Kyle explained.

Training for HYROX

The podcast offered insights into effective HYROX training. The team emphasized the importance of balancing endurance and strength. Running-focused workouts build the aerobic base, while targeted strength training prepares athletes for challenges like sled pushes and wall balls.

For doubles or relay teams, strategy and communication are essential. Practice sessions that simulate race conditions help partners decide how to divide the workload efficiently. Becky shared that she and Adam split stations based on their strengths, with Adam handling heavier sled work and Becky focusing on runs and lighter movements.

The Growing Appeal of HYROX

HYROX’s rapid growth signals its strong appeal across fitness levels. With a format that is challenging yet accessible, the race has attracted everyone from recreational runners to professional athletes. Its structured, repeatable design makes it easy for participants to track progress and set goals.

The podcast team noted parallels between HYROX’s rising popularity and the early days of CrossFit. The excitement, camaraderie, and grassroots vibe at HYROX events mirror the competitive fitness community’s growth a decade ago.

Looking Ahead

As HYROX gains traction, Training Think Tank plans to deepen its involvement. Several team members are already preparing for the upcoming race in Atlanta, and the team has launched HYROX-specific training programs to help athletes succeed.

For those curious about HYROX, the podcast hosts encourage giving it a try. Whether you’re a CrossFit enthusiast, a runner, or someone looking for a new fitness challenge, HYROX offers an exciting opportunity to test your limits.

By blending endurance and functional fitness in a supportive community setting, HYROX is carving out a unique space in the fitness world—one 1K run at a time.
