Brent Fikowski, one of CrossFit’s most consistent and beloved athletes, has officially announced his retirement after a storied 12-year career.
The Canadian competitor, known for his strategic approach and relentless work ethic, shared his journey in a new documentary by TYR Sport.
The film chronicles his rise from a volleyball athlete to a CrossFit icon, offering a deeply personal look at his evolution as an athlete and a person.
Finding CrossFit: A New Arena for Competition
Fikowski’s path to CrossFit began unexpectedly. A former volleyball player, he initially walked into a CrossFit gym 12 years ago to improve his performance on the court. What started as a tool for better fitness quickly turned into something much more.
After entering a local CrossFit competition, Fikowski realized he had potential in the sport. Despite minimal training, he finished fifth out of 50 competitors. That experience planted the seed for a new passion.
“I didn’t think I’d have that much fun, and I definitely didn’t think I’d be good at it,” Fikowski recalls in the documentary. “But I loved the challenges and the new skills I was learning. It made me want to keep going.”
Process Over Perfection: A Winning Mindset
For Fikowski, success was never about trophies or medals. Early in his athletic career, he embraced a philosophy focused on process and effort over results.
“Success is giving your best when your best is needed,” he reflects. “It’s not about the shiny goals—it’s about showing up, working hard, and seeing progress every day.”
This mindset carried him through countless CrossFit competitions, where he became known for his meticulous planning and steady improvement. His ability to analyze weaknesses, refine skills, and peak at the right moments earned him the nickname “The Professor.”
A Career of Consistency and Excellence
Fikowski’s CrossFit career is marked by consistent top-tier finishes. From Dubai to Waterpalooza, the CrossFit Games to the Rogue Invitational, his results speak to his dedication and preparation.
In the last two years alone, he delivered what he considers his best performances, finishing in the top five in major events like Rogue and the CrossFit Games. “It’s been my best run,” he says. “Nine events in a row where I’ve placed between second and fourth.”
Despite his success, Fikowski remains humble about his journey, attributing much of it to the camaraderie and support within the CrossFit community.
“It’s the people—my fellow competitors and the fans—that made this experience so special,” he says. “Sharing the floor with these athletes has been the privilege of my life.”
Why Retire Now?
The decision to step away wasn’t an easy one, especially as Fikowski felt he was still improving. However, shifting priorities led him to reconsider his future.
“Earlier in 2024, my wife and I began talking about the possibility of retiring,” Fikowski shares. “It wasn’t about physical ability—I felt like I was getting better. But my energy and excitement were shifting toward new challenges.”
Among those challenges is his involvement with the Professional Fitness Athletes’ Association (PFA), where he hopes to improve the sport for future athletes. Additionally, as a new father, Fikowski felt the time commitment required to compete at an elite level was taking him away from his family.
“I want to pour that same level of dedication into other areas, like making this sport better and being present for my daughter,” he explains.
Leaving a Legacy
As Fikowski steps away from competition, he leaves behind a legacy of hard work, humility, and gratitude. Over the past 12 years, he has become a role model for aspiring athletes, showing that consistent effort and a love for the process can lead to extraordinary achievements.
“I’m proud that I gave my best,” Fikowski says. “I’ve poured everything into this sport, and I’m leaving with no regrets. It’s been an incredible chapter.”
Though he won’t be competing anymore, Fikowski isn’t stepping away from the sport entirely. His work with the PFA and his passion for growing CrossFit ensure that his influence will be felt for years to come.
For fans, Fikowski’s retirement marks the end of an era—but also the beginning of an exciting new chapter for one of the sport’s greatest ambassadors.
